“This summer Ewan was diagnosed with an aggressive form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Despite an ambitious goal to be able to join his class for the first day of school, he did it! Today I had the pleasure of meeting Ewan’s second-grade classmates and his teacher, Mrs. Tivan. His class listened to Ewan’s story about life for a kid battling cancer, and dutifully sanitized their hands. We don’t often see all the ways the Mercer Island School District is working full-throttle to fulfill its mission of ‘Developing a compassionate, innovative, collaborative community of learners prepared to access and contribute to the ever-changing global and digital world.’

I’m guilty of not realizing and appreciating the many ways our schools work tirelessly to tailor an education to the needs of every single student. I have now witnessed how teachers and staff see every single child as a unique individual. They truly teach on a personalized level, striving for nothing less than excellence. It is the root of the MISD.”

Ewan’s mom
